Looking for a new mental skill that has been proven to create brain growth? It is time to learn a new language. While many studies tout the benefits of exposing children to more than one language, experts now know that it is never too late to gain from this intellectual accomplishment. Becoming proficient doesn’t need to be your main purpose. Then again, maybe you will become fluent and that can have both a social and a financial impact on your life.
Preliminary research indicates that being multilingual improves one’s memory, communication, and multitasking skills. People speaking two or more languages are also said to be more cognitively creative and more aware of their environment. Finally, some studies show that mental illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia tend to occur much later in people who speak more than one language.

My favorite app for language learning is Duolingo, but there are several other popular options. I really like the daily notification that Duolingo sends out. It also tracks how many days in a row you have consistently practiced, so my son and I like to have a friendly competition to see who can get the most consecutive days.
New Habit: Download a language app and turn on the notifications so you get reminded each day to practice. Find a friend and challenge each other to keep increasing your learning streak.
